Get Organized This Year – Make That New Planner Useful – 3 Top Tips

So here we are at the beginning of the New Year, and you’ve decided to start it right by getting a shiny new planner/calendar/date book.  The problem is, every other year has started this way, and yet the books always end up buried under a pile of mail long before Valentine’s Day.  Planners, of whatever sort you choose, are a wonderful tool to help you organize your life, but how to make them useful and effective?   

 

Many folks believe if they just find the **right** system, that everything will fall into place.  I suspect the companies that make these planners bank on our optimism when they design and market these amazingly complex date books and calendars!

 

I would like to submit that it’s the simplest system that will work best for the average person who just wants to keep track of appointments, important dates and obligations.  I also submit that it’s not the system that makes the difference, but, YOU, the person using it.  You must develop some good habits in order for your calendar to be of any use to you at all.

 

The first habit you must develop in using a planner is to BRING IT WITH YOU EVERYWHERE.  I can’t stress this enough.  If you don’t have the book with you, and you run into a friend or business associate who wants to schedule something, how can you do it?  You’ll find yourself back to the old way of scribbling a note on a scrap piece of paper and hoping to find it when you need it. 

 

The next habit you need to develop is to WRITE EVERYTHING IN IT, don’t trust your memory.  The only thing you can be certain about your memory is that it will fail you at some point.  Not only that, but trying to juggle everything in your mind adds needless stress and anxiety to life.  (And who need more of that these days?)  Trust me, write it down.  Even little notes to yourself: those brilliant ideas, books or cds you think of  to buy, things to look up later all can be written down for future reference.  Try it, you’ll find it very freeing!

 

The final habit you need to develop is to CHECK YOUR PLANNER EVERY DAY, at least once a day.  Don’t forget to flip a couple of pages ahead (depending on whether you have a daily, weekly or monthly system) so something doesn’t catch you by surprise when you turn the page. 

 

Put into practice these three simple habits and you will be certain to be more organized, relaxed and productive in the New Year.
